Banks can be considered the backbone of the economy. They play a vital role in facilitating financial transactions, protecting valuable deposits, and extending credit—all contributing to economic growth. They’re pillars of trust and stability, providing essential services to help both individuals and businesses thrive.

However, banks face challenges in managing their services while complying with various regulations. Our client, a regional bank in Dallas, Texas, encountered significant regulatory and operational issues that threatened their growth and stability.

Obstacle

Our client was a Regional Bank and BAAS located in Dallas, Texas. They had one operating office with a workforce of approximately 300 employees. Despite their size, they still needed to employ exceptional individuals to remain competitive, especially in senior roles. Unfortunately, their existing Chief Credit Officer (CCO) was not meeting the company’s expectations. The bank’s commercial lending portfolio was declining and failing to meet regulatory standards.

As a result, the bank suffered financial difficulties and faced increased regulatory oversight. Regulatory agencies were on the verge of taking action if the bank didn’t improve its policies and management practices. Our client then collaborated with our experts to find a senior-level CCO capable of revitalizing underperforming portfolios and strengthening relationships with regulators.

Solution

As we are in New York, we had to enter the Dallas market and conduct research to identify potential CCOs near the bank. The candidate we searched for had to have relevant experience in commercial lending and regulatory compliance. It had to be very specific to what the bank needed. Not every senior officer could easily fill the role.

To broaden our search, we expanded the talent pool to include candidates in senior roles just below the CCO level who had strong regulatory expertise and a proven track record of successfully turning around a struggling organization.

We were also transparent with our executive search process. Every detail was conveyed to meet expectations, increasing the chance of finding a CCO that perfectly fit the profile. This included the five-day onsite requirement for the role, the bank’s compliance status, the declining portfolio, and other confidential information.

Outcome

After six months, Madison-Davis placed a qualified Chief Credit Officer at the regional bank. The new CCO had significant experience in commercial lending and regulatory compliance, leading to immediate positive changes:

  • Portfolio Stabilization: Improved the commercial lending portfolio by 25% within the first year.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Built better relationships with regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance and avoiding sanctions.
  • Operational Growth: Expanded the bank’s operations in Eastern Texas, attracting new clients.
  • Team Development: Started building a dedicated risk management team, strengthening the bank’s governance.

Impact

The new CCO significantly improved the regional bank’s operations and regulatory standing:

  • Financial Health: Stabilized and grew the commercial lending portfolio, enhancing the bank’s financial stability.
  • Regulatory Standing: Achieved full compliance with regulatory standards, reducing oversight and the risk of sanctions.
  • Market Expansion: The bank’s presence increased in Eastern Texas, increasing its market share and attracting more clients.
  • Ongoing Success: The CCO continues to lead risk management efforts, driving continuous improvements and maintaining strong compliance practices.
